Anna University

Anna University was established in the year 1978 as a unitary type of technical university amalgamating four institutions: College of Engineering, Guindy, AC College of Technology, Madras Institute of Technology and School of Architecture and Planning. It offers higher education in Engineering, Technology and allied Sciences relevant to the current and projected needs of the society. Besides promoting research and disseminating knowledge gained therefrom, it fosters cooperation between the academic and industrial communities. University Grants Commission has recognized the achievements of Anna University and provided the university with the coveted status as the University with Potential for Excellence in the field of Bio Medical Engineering and Instrumentation. College of Engineering, Guindy the main campus of the university is one of the oldest technical institutions in India which has celebrated its bicentenary.

Department of Electronics and Communication was established in the year 1945. and later it became one of the University Departments in the College of Engineering, Guindy Campus, Anna University, Chennai. This department is offering UG programme in Electronics and Communication Engineering and later in 2008, UG programme in Biomedical Engineering was started. The department also offers the following PG programmes namely in Communication Systems, Applied Electronics, Medical Electronics, Bio Medical Engineering and VLSI Design of which M.E Medical Electronics was first of its kind in Indian Universities when it was started in the year 1993.

Synergy Between Medicine and Engineering

The core healthcare engineering and research in medical sciences will have ever increasing interface with technology areas. The future will witness the merging of entire technologies and medicine.

This century belongs to Medical Electronics Engineering. The society is already witnessing the major revolutions in bio medicine and medical electronics. The growth of medical electronics professionals in India is not commensurate with the demand. Medical Electronics engineers develop devices and procedures that solve medical and health related problems by combining their knowledge of biology and medicine with engineering principles and practices. Medical Electronics engineers design devices used in various medical procedures, imaging systems such as ultrasound imaging, MRI, development of prosthetic devices and devices for automatic drug delivery systems.
